Our client, a global leader in financial services located in the North York/Richmond Hill area has selected The Talent Company to help search for a Government Affairs Lead. Reporting to the Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, the Government Affairs Lead is accountable for establishing, maintaining and expanding professional relationships with government and regulatory officials to position and recognize our client as an industry leader within financial services.  This role is also accountable for identifying, recommending, delivering and evaluating political and regulatory activities designed to positively influence the organization’s ability to achieve regional and national business goals.

 
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain effective and positive relationships with key government stakeholders in the five provinces where the organization conducts business
  • Lobby the organization’s position on industry and regulatory changes
  • Develop, recommend, advocate and influence approaches to policy challenges
  • Monitor and respond to industry issues that have the potential to impact the organization’s business
  • Provide advice and coaching to others in key business functional areas who interact with government
  • Participate on teams that are focused on preparing the market for business opportunity
  • Engage in key files, committees and initiatives with the national trade association
  • Develop company positions and handle sensitive media relations, issues management and/or attend to matters of public policy with a goal to protecting and/or enhancing company reputation in the public domain
  • Draft briefs and reports on key government and regulatory initiatives, programs and policies for internal consideration and action
  • Be a contributing member of the Law & Regulations team and support colleagues involved in all aspects of the regulatory landscape

 
Requirements
  • Post-secondary degree in a related discipline (e.g. Political Science, Journalism, Business) with 8+ years of relevant career experience
  • Strong government and public relations acumen, including deep knowledge of various levels of government
  • In-depth knowledge of the Canadian political process, especially with respect to influencing the path of legislation or regulatory decision-making
  • Pre-existing contacts with government officials is a definite asset
  • Knowledge of the Canadian financial services industry and experience in the property and casualty industry is preferred
  • Demonstrated networking and influencing skills with the ability to motivate change
  • Ability to be proactive, take initiative, multi-task competing priorities and remain focused/organized in a fast paced environment
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to present information in an organized, logical and effective manner to a wide variety of audiences
  • Being fully bilingual in English and French is an asset
