National Director of Labour Relations and Health & Safety

Our client, a national health services provider has retained The Talent Company to help recruit for a National Director, Labour Relations and Employee Health & Safety. In this exciting role, you will have the opportunity to build and grow a leading practices function as well as develop a Labour Relations & Health and Safety strategy to deliver on longer-term business goals. 
Reporting into the Vice President, Human Resources, the incumbent will oversee a team of national Labour Relations and Employee Health & Safety professionals. across the organization. 
Labour Relations
  • Development and implementation of the organization’s labour relations strategy.
  • Lead contract negotiations on behalf of the organization.
  • Maintain strong proactive and trusted relationships with the different union leaders
  • Monitor external market trends; prepare market intelligence information and collective bargaining negotiations.
  • Interpret and administer the company’s multiple collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws.
  • Develop, implement and manage policies and procedures related to grievances, arbitration and mediation.
  • Works closely with management to ensure a positive working relationship between management, employees and their respective bargaining agents.
Employee Health and Safety
  • Provide direction and support to the safety leadership team in developing, implementing and improving safety management systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with a team of Health and Safety professionals to ensure a culture of health and safety.
  • Interact at all levels of the organization to drive standards and compliance that is consistent with the organizations values as well as legislative requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Relations, Law or related discipline. Masters level education will be preferred.
  • More than 10 years of labour relations experience at a senior leadership level, in a large multi-site, multi-union environment, preferably in HealthCare or a related services environment.
  • A labour relations expert with strong expertise in leading negotiations and working in both unionized and non-unionized environments. 
  • Proven success in developing proactive, leading edge safety practices and driving a top-tier safety culture is an asset.
  • Proven experience as lead spokesperson in collective bargaining
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative, positive relationships with all stakeholders in a matrix structure
  • Experience managing and working with teams across locations and geographies
  • About 25-30% of travel required
